How My 7-Year-Old Became My Accidental Publicist

How My 7-Year-Old Became My Accidental Publicist
And now I’m totally rethinking everything I thought I knew about personal branding…
Let me set the scene
I’m at yet another volleyball practice with younger kids in tow, chatting with another mom about absolutely nothing business-related.
We’re talking juice boxes, how we don’t really know how to do the “Tik Toks” and who has the best breakfast tacos in town (I’m pretty partial to Tacos N Salsa next to WMSA, but I may be biased because the ladies are the best and they always remember my order).
Out of nowhere, my kid interrupts.
“My mom helps people grow their businesses. She talks on a microphone and throws parties for business ladies. And she’s really good at it.”
I blink.
The other mom looks impressed.
Meanwhile, my brain is internally screaming…
Wait. Was that my elevator pitch?
Did I just get out-branded by a 7-year-old with yogurt (among other things) on her shirt?
Here’s what hit me
My daughter didn’t worry about sounding professional. She didn’t shrink her message. She didn’t overthink it. She just said it with total confidence.
And it got me wondering… what if we talked about our businesses like that?
No downplaying.
No disclaimers.
No “I just do a little…”
Just bold, simple clarity… snack crumbs and all.
We overcomplicate visibility
Most moms in business aren’t struggling with visibility because we lack value. We struggle because we overthink how to talk about that value.
If you’ve ever…
-
Stared at a blank bio field for way too long
-
Second-guessed a post because it sounded “braggy”
-
Watered down your offers so they felt more “approachable”
-
Avoided saying what you really do at networking events
… then you know exactly what I mean.
Visibility is not about being perfect. It’s about being clear, confident, and consistent enough that people know what to say about you when you are not in the room. Or when your kid is.
3 visibility tips straight from my kid’s accidental pitch
💙 Keep it simple
If a second grader can’t repeat what you do, it’s probably too complicated.
Try this: “I help [who] do [what] so they can [result].”
💙 Say it like you are proud
No more whispering your brilliance. Say it like you mean it. Juice pouch optional.
💙 Show the behind-the-scenes
The messy, funny, real stuff is what people remember. Personal stories build trust way faster than a polished Canva graphic ever will.
You are definitely not just a mom-owned business
You are the face of your brand. The voice behind the value. The energy people feel when they think about what you offer!
So the next time you hesitate to post, pitch, or promote yourself, channel your inner kid. Clear. Confident. Completely unbothered.
Because if my 7-year-old can explain my business like a pro with feral hair and light-up shoes, I can show up today… even if it’s less than perfect.

Real moms. Real business. Real connection.
And if you bring your kid, don’t be surprised when they remind you why you started in the first place… and maybe even inspire your next post. 💙
